If you own a freehold property, you own the building and the land it stands on, and there is no time limit to the period of ownership. However, if you own a leasehold property, you do not own the land in which the property stands, and you are the owner for a fixed term only.
Unless you agree to extend or purchase the lease, it can revert to the freeholder. If the lease has less than 80-90 years left, selling the property can be problematic as mortgage lenders will not offer mortgages on property with short leases. In addition, statutory lease extensions cost more on short leases.
